SCENE 5
      SPIKE'S CRYPT

                                  DSL is SPIKE'S CRYPT area, with
                                  his SLAB, some CANDLES and more of
                                  SPIKE'S decorations.

                                  SPIKE enters climbing stairs up
                                  through the TRAP DOOR. He is
                                  holding a BOTTLE. BUFFY enters
                                  USL.


                        SPIKE
           The sun sets and she appears. Come to serenade
           me?

                        BUFFY
           So you know what's going on?

                        SPIKE
           Well, I've seen some damn funny things 
           the last two days. Six-hundred pound
           Chirago demon making like Yma Sumac. That
           one'll stay with you. I remain immune, happy to
           say.
                       (He holds up the bottle)
           Drink?

                        BUFFY
           A world of no. So any idea what's causing this?

                        SPIKE
                       (genuinely pissed)
           Oh. So that's all. You just come to pump me for
           information.

                        BUFFY
           What else would I want to pump you for?
                       (awkward moment)
           I really just said that, didn't I?

                        SPIKE
           Yeah, well... Don't want to bore you with the
           small talk.
                       (He turns to go back down the trap door)
           Don't know a thing.

                        BUFFY
           What's up? You're all bad moody.

                        SPIKE
                       (turns back to her, indicating the door)
           It's nothing. Glad you could stop by.
                       (She doesn't move)
           It's nothing.

                        BUFFY
           What?


      "REST IN PEACE"

                        SPIKE
      I DIED SO MANY YEARS AGO

                                  He is confused for a moment, then
                                  throws his head back in
                                  frustration.

                                  BUFFY rolls her eyes.

                        SPIKE (cont'd)
      YOU CAN MAKE ME FEEL
      LIKE IT ISN'T SO
      AND WHY YOU COME TO BE WITH ME
      I THINK I FINALLY KNOW
      YOU'RE SCARED
      ASHAMED OF WHAT YOU FEEL
      AND YOU CAN'T TELL THE ONES YOU LOVE
      YOU KNOW THEY COULDN'T DEAL
      WHISPER IN A DEAD MAN'S EAR
      IT DOESN'T MAKE IT REAL
      THAT'S GREAT

                       (He drops to his knees in front of her)

                       (He stands, his face close to BUFFY'S)
      UNTIL YOU DO, I'M TELLIN' YOU
      STOP VISITING MY GRAVE
      AND LET ME REST IN PEACE

                                  BUFFY'S had enough. She walks
                                  "out" of the crypt to USC. SPIKE
                                  follows.

                                  LIGHTS UP to MOONLIGHT on CS,
                                  LIGHTS OUT on SPIKE'S CRYPT.

SCENE 6
      SUNNYDALE CEMETERY - NIGHT - CONTINUING

                                  A PRIEST followed by SIX
                                  PALLBEARERS carrying a COFFIN
                                  enter DSL (Maybe followed by
                                  MOURNERS) crossing the stage.

                        SPIKE
      I KNOW I SHOULD GO
      BUT I FOLLOW YOU LIKE A MAN POSSESSED.
      THERE'S A TRAITOR HERE BENEATH MY BREAST
      AND IT HURTS ME MORE THAN YOU'VE EVER GUESSED
      IF MY HEART COULD BEAT, IT WOULD BREAK MY CHEST
      BUT I CAN SEE YOU'RE UNIMPRESSED
      SO LEAVE ME BE AND LET ME REST IN PEACE

                                  The PROCESSION has reached their
                                  destination, the PRIEST turns
                                  around to face the PALLBEARERS,
                                  and the PALLBEARERS lower the
                                  coffin to the ground.

                                  Just as they do, SPIKE leaps onto
                                  the coffin. The PALLBEARERS are
                                  shocked and back away.

                                  As he sings SPIKE jumps from the
                                  coffin and scares away each of the
                                  PALLBEARERS, raising his arms in
                                  mock monster poses.

                        SPIKE (cont'd)
      LET ME REST IN PEACE
      LET ME GET SOME SLEEP
      LET ME TAKE MY LOVE AND BURY IT
      IN A HOLE SIX-FOOT DEEP

                                  SPIKE now grabs the PRIEST and
                                  gets in his face.

                        SPIKE (cont'd)
      I CAN LAY MY BODY DOWN
      BUT I CAN'T FIND MY SWEET RELEASE
      LET ME REST IN PEACE

                                  BUFFY grabs SPIKE off the PRIEST
                                  and spins him 180 degrees round
                                  herself. They are so close to the
                                  COFFIN that his momentum causes
                                  SPIKE to fall back onto the
                                  COFFIN, while BUFFY, still holding
                                  him, falls on top of him. Their
                                  faces are inches apart.

                        SPIKE (cont'd)
      WHY WON'T YOU LET ME REST IN PEACE?

                                  BUFFY jumps up and runs off stage.

                        SPIKE (cont'd)
                       (still sprawled on the COFFIN)
           So... you're not staying, then?

                                                          BLACKOUT
SCENE 7
      THE BRONZE

                                  DAWN is lying unconscious on the
                                  floor CS.
      "DAWN'S BALLET"

                                  She slowly wakes. Her movements
                                  are a ballet. She stands and runs
                                  DSR to escape, but is cut off by
                                  PUPPET 1 entering.

                                  She runs DRL and again is cut off,
                                  by PUPPET 2 entering.

                                  She turns US to see if the way is
                                  clear, but PUPPET 3 enters USR.

                                  DAWN and the PUPPETS dance a cat
                                  and mouse ballet which ends with
                                  one of the PUPPETS sliding her
                                  across the floor so she stops at
                                  the bottom of the stairs.

      "WHAT YOU FEEL"

                                  A tight SPOTLIGHT appears on the
                                  stage at the top of the stairs.
                                  Two feet jump into the spotlight
                                  with the click of tap shoes. As he
                                  taps down the stairs the SPOTLIGHT
                                  opens to reveal SWEET.

                        SWEET
      WHY'D YOU RUN AWAY?
      DON'T YOU LIKE MY STYLE?
      WHY DON'T YOU COME AND PLAY?
      I GUARANTEE A GREAT BIG SMILE
      I COME FROM THE IMAGINATION
      AND I'M HERE STRICTLY BY YOUR INVOCATION
      SO WHAT DO YOU SAY
      WHY DON'T WE DANCE A WHILE?
      I'M THE HEART OF SWING
      I'M THE TWIST AND SHOUT
      WHEN YOU GOTTA SING
      WHEN YOU GOTTA LET IT OUT
      YOU CALL ME AND I COME A-RUNNIN'
      I TURN THE MUSIC ON

      NOW WE'RE PARTYIN'
      THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

                                  SWEET faces DAWN and raises his
                                  hand. She rises as though he is
                                  controlling her.

                                  She reluctantly joins the dance
                                  with him.

                        SWEET (cont'd)
      'CAUSE I KNOW WHAT YOU FEEL, GIRL
      I KNOW JUST WHAT YOU FEEL, GIRL

                        DAWN
                       (spoken, overly optimistic)
           So you're like a good demon? Bringing the fun
           in?

                        SWEET
                       (chuckles)
      ALL THESE MELODIES THEY GO ON TOO LONG
      THEN THAT ENERGY STARTS TO COME ON
      WAY TOO STRONG
      ALL THOSE HEARTS LAY OPEN
      THAT MUST STING
      PLUS SOME CUSTOMERS
      JUST START COMBUSTING
      THAT'S THE PENALTY
      WHEN LIFE IS BUT A SONG
      YOU BROUGHT ME DOWN
      AND DOOMED THIS TOWN
      SO WHEN WE BLOW THIS SCENE
      BACK WE WILL GO
      TO MY KINGDOM BELOW
      AND YOU WILL BE MY QUEEN!

                                  [DAWN appears in a gown?]

                        SWEET (cont'd)
      'CAUSE I KNOW WHAT YOU FEEL, GIRL.

                        DAWN
      NO, YOU SEE, YOU AND ME
      WOULDN'T BE VERY REGAL

                        SWEET
      I'LL MAKE IT REAL, GIRL

                        DAWN
      WHAT I MEAN, I'M FIFTEEN
      SO THIS QUEEN THING'S ILLEGAL

                        SWEET
      I CAN BRING WHOLE CITIES TO RUIN
      AND STILL HAVE TIME TO GET A SOFT-SHOE IN

                        DAWN
      WELL, THAT'S GREAT BUT I'M LATE
      AND I'D HATE TO DELAY HER

                        SWEET
      SOMETHING'S COOKING, I'M AT THE GRIDDLE
      I BOUGHT NERO HIS VERY FIRST FIDDLE

                        DAWN
      SHE'LL GET PISSED IF I'M MISSED
      SEE MY SISTER'S THE SLAYER

                                  SWEET stops dead.

                        SWEET
                       (spoken)
           The Slayer?

                        DAWN
                       (spoken)
           Uh huh.

                        SWEET
                       (spoken, to PUPPETS)
           Find her. Tell her... tell her anything. Just
           get her here. I want to see the Slayer burn.

                                  The PUPPETS exit. DAWN cringes.

                        SWEET (cont'd)
      NOW WE'RE PARTYIN'
      THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT.

                                                          BLACKOUT
 
SCENE 8
      TRAINING ROOM - NIGHT

                                  GILES holds up a wooden board,
                                  martial arts training style. BUFFY
                                  kicks it in half.

                        GILES
           Good. Good.

                        BUFFY
           I feel like I should bow or have honor or
           something.

                        GILES
           It may seem hokey but we need to work on
           precision and concentration as much as power.
           I'm still not sure what we're facing.

                        BUFFY
                       (doing stretches)
           You'll figure it out. I'm just worried this
           whole session's going to turn into some
           training montage from an 80's movie.

                        GILES
           If we hear any inspirational power chords,
           we'll just lie down until they go away. Anyway,
           I don't think we need to work that much on your
           strength.

                        BUFFY
           Yeah, I'm pretty spry for a corpse.

                        GILES
           Have you spoken to Dawn about her...um...her...

                        BUFFY
           Her rampant kleptomania?

                        GILES
           Yes, well...I wouldn't have --

                        BUFFY
           I thought you could take care of that... You
           being the fatherly authoritarian figure and
           all.

                        GILES
                       (Sadly)
           Right.

                        BUFFY
           What would I do without you?

                                  She finishes stretching and takes
                                  a defensive stance.

                        BUFFY (cont'd)
           Okay. I'm ready.
"STANDING" GILES YOU'RE NOT READY FOR THE WORLD OUTSIDE YOU KEEP PRETENDING BUT YOU JUST CAN'T HIDE I KNOW I SAID THAT I'D BE STANDING BY YOUR SIDE BUT I... As he sings, GILES throws a few KNIVES at BUFFY as she deflects them. GILES (cont'd) YOU'RE PATH'S UNBEATEN AND IT'S ALL UPHILL AND YOU CAN MEET IT BUT YOU NEVER WILL AND I'M THE REASON THAT YOU'RE STANDING STILL BUT I... They now seem to separate into their own worlds. LIGHTS UP DS as GILES moves DS into them. The LIGHTS DIM on the platform and remain low so we can just make out BUFFY doing slow exercises (maybe in silhouette). GILES (cont'd) I WISH I COULD SAY THE RIGHT WORDS TO LEAD YOU THROUGH THIS LAND WISH I COULD PLAY THE FATHER AND TAKE YOU BY THE HAND WISH I COULD STAY HERE BUT NOW I UNDERSTAND... I'M STANDING IN THE WAY THE CRIES AROUND YOU YOU DON'T HEAR AT ALL 'CAUSE YOU KNOW I'M HERE TO TAKE THAT CALL SO YOU JUST LIE THERE WHEN YOU SHOULD BE STANDING TALL BUT I... During the last verse, BUFFY will end her exercises, throw a TOWEL over her shoulders and move DS beside GILES, just as he finishes the song. GILES (cont'd) I WISH I COULD LAY YOUR ARMS DOWN AND LET YOU REST AT LAST WISH I COULD SLAY YOUR DEMONS BUT NOW THAT TIME HAS PASSED WISH I COULD STAY HERE YOUR STALWART STANDING FAST BUT I'M STANDING IN THE WAY (looking right at BUFFY) I'M JUST STANDING IN THE WAY BUFFY Did you just say something? LIGHTS OUT as GILES and BUFFY exit. (This is where BUFFY will change into her final costume.) LIGHTS UP on MAGIC BOX.
SCENE 9
      THE MAGIC BOX - NIGHT

                                  TARA enters USR holding her
                                  NECKLACE in her hand and walks
                                  briskly (up the stairs) to the
                                  BOOKCASE. She runs her finger
                                  along a shelf then picks out a
                                  book, flicks through it and stops
                                  suddenly. She looks at the page
                                  then to the necklace in her hand.

                        TARA
           "Lethe's Bramble. Used for augmenting spells of
           forgetting and mind control."

                                  Tara turns and looks down at
                                  Willow talking to Buffy in the
                                  front of the store.

      "UNDER YOUR SPELL/STANDING (REPRISE)"

                        TARA (cont'd)
      I'M UNDER YOUR SPELL
      GOD, HOW CAN THIS BE?
      PLAYING WITH MY MEMORY
      YOU KNOW I'VE BEEN THROUGH HELL
      WILLOW, DON'T YOU SEE?
      THERE'LL BE NOTHING LEFT OF ME
      YOU MADE ME BELIEVE

                                  GILES enters USL.

                        GILES
      BELIEVE ME, I DON'T WANT TO GO
      AND IT'LL GRIEVE ME 'CAUSE I LOVE YOU SO
      BUT WE BOTH KNOW...

                                  WILLOW and BUFFY enter DSR and
                                  discuss something, unheard in the
                                  MAGIC SHOP.

                                  GILES and TARA have now moved to
                                  be side by side, looking at the
                                  pair.

                        GILES (cont'd)
      WISH I COULD SAY THE RIGHT WORDS
      TO LEAD YOU THROUGH THIS LAND
      WISH I COULD PLAY THE FATHER
      AND TAKE YOU BY THE HAND
      WISH I COULD STAY HERE

                        TARA
                       (Simultaneously)

                                  XANDER and ANYA enter DSR as SPIKE
                                  enters DSL, pushing PUPPET 1 in
                                  front of him.

                        SPIKE
           Looky looky what I found.

                        TARA
                       (crossing to DSL)
           Is this the demon guy?

                                  When WILLOW hears TARA she turns
                                  to greet her will a big smile.

                        WILLOW
           Tara!

                                  TARA pointedly ignores her. WILLOW
                                  is puzzled.

                        SPIKE
           Works for him. Has a nice little story for the
           Slayer, don't you? Come on, then. Sing!

                                  SPIKE shoves him forward. Music
                                  swells, maybe a spotlight on the
                                  PUPPET.

                        PUPPET 1
                       (spoken, monotone)
           My master has the Slayer's sister hostage at
           the Bronze because she summoned him and at
           midnight he's going to take her to the
           underworld to be his queen.

                        GILES
           What does he want?

                        DUMMY
                       (pointing to BUFFY)
           Her.

                        SPIKE
           If that's all you've got to say, then --

                                  SPIKE moves up to grab him but the
                                  PUPPET breaks his grip, pushes
                                  SPIKE aside and exits running.

                        SPIKE (cont'd)
           Strong. Someday he'll be a real boy.

                        BUFFY
           So... Dawn's in trouble. Must be Tuesday.

                        TARA
           I just left her for a few minutes.

                        BUFFY
           Oh, it's not your fault.
                       (to Giles)
           So what's the plan?

                        XANDER
           Plan schman. Let's mount up.

                        GILES
           No.

                                  Everyone is a bit surprised by his
                                  reply.

                        ANYA
           Dawn may have had the wrong idea in summoning
           this creature but I've seen some of these
           underworld child-bride deals and they never end
           well.... Maybe once.

                        WILLOW
           We're not just going to stay here?

                        GILES
           Yes, we are. Buffy's going alone.

                        SPIKE
           Don't be a stupid git! There is no --

                        GILES
           If I want your opinion, Spike, I'll -- (beat)
           I'll never want your opinion.

                        WILLOW
           A little confusion spell could --

                        TARA
           No!
                       (Everyone, including TARA is surprised by
                        her urgency of her tone and she pulls it
                        back)
           I mean, I don't think it'll help.

                        SPIKE
           Forget them, Slayer. I got your back.

                        BUFFY
           I thought you wanted me to stay away from you.
           Isn't that what you sang?

                        XANDER
           Spike sang a wittle song?

                        ANYA
           Would you say it was a breakaway pop hit or
           more of a book number?

                        XANDER
           Let it go, sweetie.

                        SPIKE
           Fine. I hope you dance till you burn. You and
           the little bit.

                                  SPIKE exits.

                        BUFFY
                       (to Giles)
           You're really not coming?

                        GILES
           It's up to you, Buffy.

                        BUFFY
           What do you expect me to do?

                        GILES
           Your best.
